It’s hard to imagine that a few years ago, preparing an entire meal with little or no oil and in record time was the stuff of science fiction. Air-fryers are now a kitchen staple in homes across the world—in my home, too. But it makes you wonder: How did we ever live without them?

The Pre–Air-Fryer Era
Do you remember when you’d preheat the oven for 20 minutes to cook a few fries? Or spent half an hour in front of the stovetop watching oil bubble? Back then, “quick weeknight dinners” still meant 30–45 minutes of clean-up and prep, and lunches for the kids still meant reheated nuggets or sandwiches.
The Oil-Drenched Trade-Off
Deep-frying was tasty at a cost: excess grease, smelly aftermath, and the post-meal chore of dumping gallons of hot oil into a vessel. And then there was the risk factor—splattering oil burns were a too-common culinary mishap.
Oven-Baked worked, but did it?
Oven-baking was a preferable option, but results could be variable: soggy bottoms, dry tops, or simply lackluster crispiness. And our utility bill would spike every time we preheated that large oven for small servings.
What an Air-Fryer Brings to the Table
Air-fryers change the game by circulating super-heated air through a small cooking chamber. The result?
- Crispy textures without deep-frying food in oil.
- Fast cook times —most items take less than 20 minutes from freezer to table.
- Versatility: from roasting veggies to “frying” fish, baking cookies to reheating pizza.
- Kid-friendly lunches that you can assemble while you’re preparing breakfast.
Practically, there’s little you can’t do with an air-fryer. And with so many different brands and sizes on offer—from small 2-liter units perfect for one or two, to family-sized 7-liter giants—you can choose what fits your space and cooking style.

Air-fryers have changed the game when it comes to cooking at home for us all. They deliver the crunch we love with a fraction of the oil, and cut cooking times in half. Whether it’s a quick dinner or tomorrow’s lunch, this nifty gadget has made its way onto (and under) our countertops. Honestly, I don’t know how I ever managed without it.
Which brand do you use or would recommend? Let me know if the comments.

Philips air fryer for sure. Just hard to clean, that’s all. But I use it a lot.
